The Sonnet Allegro USB-C 2-Port PCIe Card is a PCI Express adapter designed to add two high-performance USB-C 10Gbps ports to desktop computers and Thunderbolt-to-PCIe expansion systems. Sonnet identifies the card as manufacturer part number USB3C-2PM-E.
The card combines a PCIe 3.0 x2 interface with an ASMedia ASM3142 USB controller, providing high USB storage performance without requiring an auxiliary power connection.
Both external Type-C ports support USB 3.2 Gen 2 operation at up to 10Gbps and remain compatible with USB 3 and USB 2 peripherals. Thunderbolt-only peripherals are not supported despite using the same USB-C connector.
Sonnet specifies transfer performance of up to 960MB/s from a single supported drive. With two USB-C Gen 2 NVMe SSD devices connected simultaneously, the card can sustain up to 925MB/s from each device under suitable conditions.
Each USB-C port advertises up to 3A of VBUS current and can provide up to 15W for compatible bus-powered devices. Independent power regulation helps prevent activity or power events on one port from disrupting a device connected to the other.
Each port includes resettable overcurrent protection. If a fuse trips because of a cable or peripheral fault, Sonnet specifies that shutting down the host system resets the protection without requiring replacement of the card.
The card draws the power required for connected USB devices from the PCIe slot and does not require a separate internal power cable, making it suitable for systems and Thunderbolt expansion chassis where auxiliary power connectors may not be available.
The Allegro card uses a PCIe 3.0 x2 interface and can auto-negotiate its data link to suit supported PCIe generations. Sonnet specifies one-lane operation in a PCIe 3.0 slot and two-lane operation in a PCIe 2.0 slot while maintaining the bandwidth required for full 10Gbps USB operation.
The card is supplied with a full-height mounting bracket fitted and a low-profile bracket in the package, allowing installation in compatible full-height or low-profile systems.
