The Areca ARC-8050T5U-12N is a 12-bay desktop Thunderbolt 5 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 RAID storage solution built around a tri-mode NVMe (U.2/U.3), SAS and SATA drive interface. It combines very high-bandwidth connectivity, true hardware RAID and flexible management to support demanding video, audio and data workflows.

With dual Thunderbolt 5 ports, an additional Thunderbolt 5 daisy-chain port and a full-sized DisplayPort 2.1 output, the ARC-8050T5U-12N integrates storage and display into a single enclosure. Hardware encryption, SAS expansion and whisper-quiet operation make it suitable for both studio and field deployment where performance and data protection are critical.

High-Performance Thunderbolt 5 And USB 3.2 Connectivity

The ARC-8050T5U-12N provides 2 x Thunderbolt 5 ports plus an additional Thunderbolt 5 daisy-chain port, supporting Thunderbolt 5 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 protocols through a USB-C interface. Thunderbolt 5 delivers 80 Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth and, with Bandwidth Boost, up to 120 Gbps for display-intensive workloads. When connected to a USB-C computer port, an internal USB device controller drives USB 3.2 Gen 2 signals so the Thunderbolt 5 port behaves like a typical USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connector, enabling broad host compatibility.

Tri-Mode 12-Bay NVMe/SAS/SATA Drive Architecture

This 12-bay desktop unit uses Areca’s tri-mode architecture, with each bay on the ARC-8050T5U-12N supporting NVMe x1 (U.2/U.3), SAS or SATA devices. The design allows NVMe/SAS/SATA or SAS/SATA-only operation depending on drive choice, so mixed media, tiered storage or straightforward HDD/SSD pools can be configured within the same enclosure. The 12-bay form factor offers high drive count density in a desktop chassis.

True Hardware RAID And High-Speed Cache

At the core of the ARC-8050T5U-12N is a Broadcom tri-mode Raid-on-Chip (ROC) storage controller with on-board SDRAM cache and ECC protection. This true hardware RAID design offloads parity generation and RAID processing from the host CPU, which helps maximize application performance, particularly during rebuilds or sustained high-load operation. Cache policy can be tuned between read and write to match workload profiles, supporting everything from 4K to multi-stream dual 6K and 8K environments.

Comprehensive RAID Feature Set

The ARC-8050T5U-12N supports RAID levels 0, 1, 1E, 3, 5, 6, 10, 30, 50, 60, Single Disk and JBOD, with multiple RAID selection, stripe sizes up to 1 MB, online array roaming and online RAID level/stripe size migration. It supports global and local hot spares, instant availability with background initialization, disk scrubbing and array verify scheduling. Additional features include multiple-pair SSD/HDD disk clone, SSD automatic monitor clone (AMC), SED drive support, HDD firmware update, and support for native 4K and 512-byte sector SAS and SATA devices.

Enterprise-Grade Encryption And SED Integration

Controller-based hardware encryption operates in real time and is host independent, securing volumes without impacting array performance. The ARC-8050T5U-12N supports 128-bit and 256-bit AES keys or password-based keys and works with any attached drives transparently to the OS and applications. Combined with SED (self-encrypting drives), the firmware security function continuously encrypts data on the disk, helping to protect against theft, loss or repurposing of drives.

DisplayPort 2.1 And High-Resolution Display Workflows

A full-sized DisplayPort 2.1 video output on the rear panel allows the ARC-8050T5U-12N to support dual 6K in/output workflows and 8K 60 Hz display configurations. Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth and Bandwidth Boost enable simultaneous high-resolution display output, daisy-chained peripherals and high-speed storage traffic, suiting real-time editing and grading environments with dual 6K or 8K HDR displays.

SAS Expansion To Large Multi-Enclosure Topologies

The ARC-8050T5U-12N includes SFF-8644 (4-lane) expansion support, allowing its capacity to be expanded using cost-effective ARC-4038 12G SAS expander units and 12G SAS JBODs. In combination, this architecture can scale up to 512 drives across multiple tower and rackmount SAS enclosures, effectively turning large SAS storage infrastructures into Thunderbolt 5–attached resources.

Flexible Management And Monitoring

Management options include a front-panel LCD with push buttons for configuration and status, in-band management over Thunderbolt via the ArcHTTP proxy agent, and out-of-band management through the dedicated RJ-45 Ethernet port. The web-based McRAID manager, ArcSAP multi-language GUI, command-line interface, API libraries, SNMP monitoring and SMTP email notifications provide a full configuration and alerting suite. System status is indicated via LCD, LEDs and an alarm buzzer.

Power, Cooling And Acoustic Design

For the 12-bay configuration, Areca specifies a 400 W power supply and dual 2700 rpm cooling fans, tuned for whisper-quiet operation. Intelligent fan control adapts speeds to environmental conditions, contributing to low acoustic levels; the sound pressure level for the ARC-8050T5U-12N/12E is specified at 37.4 dB. This makes the unit well suited to video and audio production environments where noise needs to be minimized.

The ARC-8050T5U-12N works with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 (Mac only), USB4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 computer ports. OS support for Thunderbolt hosts includes macOS 15.3 or above and Windows 11 (23H2) or above for Thunderbolt 5, macOS 14.x or above and Windows 11 or above for Thunderbolt 4, and macOS 15.0 or above for Thunderbolt 3, while USB operation is OS independent.
