The SymplyPRO Ethernet Bridge 1RU is designed for organisations that want to share existing SAS-attached LTO tape resources across a standard Ethernet network without tying each tape drive to a dedicated workstation or server. Acting as an iSCSI target, the bridge converts high-speed 10Gb Ethernet access into a 12Gb SAS connection for external LTO drives.
Two independent 10GbE SFP+ data ports provide the network-facing side of the appliance. Hosts connect using iSCSI and see the attached tape resources through the bridge, allowing LTO workflows to be separated from individual host computers and made available across an appropriately configured 10GbE network.
The rear 12Gb mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) connection supports up to four external SAS LTO tape drives. Those drives can be standalone LTO units, drives installed in an automated tape library, or a combination of both. No LTO drive is included in the Ethernet Bridge itself.
Symply documents support for up to four iSCSI initiators with two sessions per initiator, for a total of eight sessions. This gives facilities flexibility when integrating tape resources into multi-system backup, archive and media workflows while keeping the tape hardware centralised.
The Ethernet Bridge supports LTFS, SAS Transport Layer Retries (TLR), access-control lists and Symply SpeedWrite technology. Symply rates the Ethernet appliance architecture for performance up to 2000MB/s, depending on the connected drives, network and workflow.
A separate 1GbE RJ45 management port keeps administration distinct from the two 10GbE data interfaces. The appliance supports command-line management over SSH and firmware updates over SFTP. Windows and Linux can use their available iSCSI initiators; for macOS, Symply specifies an iSCSI initiator such as ATTO Xtend SAN.
The bridge is housed in a 1RU rackmount chassis and ships with a rack kit. Symply specifies an internal 350W 110–240V power supply, with typical consumption listed at 166W, and a 3-year manufacturer warranty.
