LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 – 4TB

The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 - 4TB (STNA4000400) combines next-generation Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth with high-performance NVMe flash storage in LaCie's rugged portable format. It is aimed at filmmakers, editors, photographers and other creative professionals who need workstation-class scratch-storage performance away from the studio.

This 4TB model is part of the current two-capacity Rugged SSD Pro5 family. LaCie's published family specification reaches up to 6,700MB/s read and 5,300MB/s write with a 50GB cache; after the cache, read performance remains specified up to 6,700MB/s while write performance is specified up to 1,800MB/s. Actual performance varies with host, interface, workload, environment and capacity.

Thunderbolt 5 Performance For 6K And 8K Workflows

Thunderbolt 5 provides up to 80Gb/s of link bandwidth, allowing Rugged SSD Pro5 to support high-resolution source playback, rapid media ingest, demanding post-production work and large project transfers. LaCie specifically positions the drive for real-time 6K and 8K creative workflows.

Up To 6,700MB/s Read And 5,300MB/s Write

LaCie specifies up to 6,700MB/s read and 5,300MB/s write performance within the 50GB cache. For longer sustained writes beyond the cache, the manufacturer specifies up to 1,800MB/s write performance. This distinction is important when comparing short burst transfers with sustained production workloads.

Thunderbolt And USB-C Host Compatibility

The drive connects through USB-C and is designed primarily for Thunderbolt 5. Seagate lists operation with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, USB 20Gb/s and USB 10Gb/s hosts, subject to operating-system, host-power and interface limitations. Connection to slower interfaces reduces available performance.

Important Windows And Thunderbolt Compatibility

For Windows, Seagate currently requires Windows 11 23H2 or later. Thunderbolt performance requires a Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 port; Thunderbolt 3 on Windows is not supported. Windows USB-C 10Gb/s or 20Gb/s operation requires a port capable of providing at least 15W when Thunderbolt 4/5 is unavailable.

Mac And iPad Pro Support

For macOS, Seagate currently specifies macOS 15 or later on a compatible Intel- or Apple-silicon Mac. Rugged SSD Pro5 can also be used with a compatible M-based iPad Pro with a Thunderbolt port and iPadOS 18 or later. Compatibility should always be checked against the current Seagate support guidance for the host in use.

IP68 Rugged Protection

The enclosure is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance and is specified to tolerate drops from up to 3 metres. LaCie also states that the drive remained functional after a test approximating the pressure of a two-tonne vehicle, although cosmetic damage may occur.

Compact, Bus-Powered Design

The drive measures approximately 98 × 65 × 17mm and weighs around 150g. It is bus powered and includes a Thunderbolt 5 80Gb/s cable, so no separate power adapter is required for normal supported operation.

Designed With Recycled Materials

LaCie states that Rugged SSD Pro5 is built with at least 45% recycled materials, combining the familiar Neil Poulton rugged industrial design with a reduced-material-impact approach.

Five-Year Warranty And Rescue Services

The Rugged SSD Pro5 carries a five-year limited warranty and includes Rescue Data Recovery Services, subject to Seagate terms and regional availability. Toolkit software is also supported for setup, backup and mirror-folder workflows.
