The OWC Thunderbolt 4 10G Ethernet Adapter connects a Thunderbolt 3/4/5 or USB4 Mac or Windows computer to a 10GBASE-T Ethernet network via an RJ45 port. Built for high-throughput tasks, it enables over 900MB/s real-world tested transfer speed for large file moves, collaborative editing, and fast access to devices such as NAS systems.
Backwards compatibility and auto-negotiation make it practical for mixed infrastructures, supporting 10Gb/s, 5Gb/s, 2.5Gb/s, 1Gb/s and 100Mb/s Base-T Ethernet standards. A ventilated aluminium heatsink housing and fanless design keep the adapter running silently cool, while bus power removes the need for an AC adapter.
In post-production environments, multiple workstations can be connected to shared RAID storage or NAS to reduce time lost copying files locally. The bandwidth available via 10GbE helps support editing directly from shared storage, keeping teams moving efficiently on data-intensive video, animation, and graphics projects.
Many modern notebook computers lack built-in Ethernet, while some desktops are limited to an old and slow 1GbE port. This adapter extends high-performance wired networking to those systems through Thunderbolt or USB4, helping unlock faster transfers and smoother network-based workflows.
The RJ45 socket is compatible with cabling infrastructures ranging from Cat 5 to Cat 7. For 10G, the adapter supports up to 100-meter cable distance with Cat6a; for 5G, Cat6; and for 2.5G, Cat5e—helping organisations and home offices upgrade speed without a full re-cable where appropriate.
Network environments often mix switch capabilities and cable grades. Auto-negotiation for 10Gb/s, 5Gb/s, 2.5Gb/s, 1Gb/s and 100Mb/s Base-T Ethernet standards helps the adapter select the best available link speed for the connected equipment.
For time-sensitive media streams, the adapter is AVB ready, making it suitable for pro audio and video applications where synchronisation of data streams is critical (requires an AVB compatible switch/router). Wake-on-LAN support also allows remote access scenarios by enabling a hibernated Windows or sleeping Mac computer to be woken for system management and file access with the right configuration.
A ventilated aluminium housing acts as a heatsink for silent, fanless operation in noise-sensitive spaces. Portability is improved by a rubber sleeve to help protect the adapter during transport, and the included Thunderbolt certified cable supports straightforward setup.
Connection is simple: attach the adapter to a Thunderbolt 3/4/5 or USB4 port using the included certified 0.3M (12") Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) Cable, then connect the RJ45 port to a wired network (10GbE for optimal speed). Mandatory Thunderbolt certification testing is part of OWC’s development process for this connectivity solution.
