OWC Express 4M2 (With SoftRAID) Product Overview

The OWC Express 4M2 is a compact, four-slot enclosure for NVMe M.2 SSDs, enabling users to build custom high-performance RAID arrays with USB4 (40Gbps) connectivity for speeds up to 3200MB/s.

From my three decades in data storage, it's a game-changer for creative pros handling massive RAW photo libraries, 8K video timelines, or multi-card offloads, offering flexibility without thermal throttling or noise distractions.

DIY Drive Flexibility

Install any combination of NVMe M.2 2230, 2242, or 2280 SSDs, scaling from single drives to full RAID sets up to 32TB total capacity.

Upgrade easily as larger drives like 16TB options emerge, keeping your setup future-proof.

RAID Versatility

Supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, 6+, 10, and JBOD via OWC SoftRAID, Apple Disk Utility, or Windows tools—no hardware RAID controller needed.

Ideal for speed-focused RAID 0 striping or mirrored RAID 1 redundancy in demanding workflows.

Cross-Platform Compatibility

Works seamlessly with USB4, Thunderbolt 3/4/5, and USB-C on Macs (macOS 14+) and PCs (Windows 10+), falling back to USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 990MB/s where needed.

Optional MacDrive software aids mixed environments.

Thermal Management

Aircraft-grade aluminum dissipates heat effectively, paired with smart fans that spin up only under load for near-silent operation.

Perfect for PCIe Gen 5 SSDs that run hot during sustained transfers.

Compact and Stable Design

Dimensions allow vertical or horizontal placement with vibration-damping feet and included stand for desktop stability.

Weighs just 1.8kg, making it shuttle-friendly for field-to-edit workflows.

SoftRAID 9 RAID 6 / RAID 6+

SoftRAID 9 Premium adds RAID 6 and RAID 6+ for dual-drive failure protection. RAID 6 and RAID 6+ require macOS 27 or later and a minimum of four drives.
