LaCie 8big Pro5 – 64TB

The LaCie 8big Pro5 64TB (SKU STNC64000400) is an eight-bay desktop hardware RAID platform designed for professional creative environments that need high sustained throughput, large raw capacity and flexible data protection. This 64TB configuration uses eight hot-swappable enterprise-class drives and combines dedicated RAID hardware with Thunderbolt 5 connectivity.

LaCie positions the 8big Pro5 for demanding workflows including RAW and 8K video editing, large project transfers, centralised studio storage and high-capacity archive work.

Thunderbolt 5 Bandwidth And Connectivity

The host connection uses Thunderbolt 5 over USB-C. The current LaCie manual specifies up to 80 Gb/s of bidirectional data bandwidth; Thunderbolt 5 can dynamically allocate additional display bandwidth for up to 120 Gb/s total throughput when data and high-bandwidth display traffic are combined. This distinction makes the normal storage-data link 80 Gb/s rather than a constant 120 Gb/s.

The enclosure provides one Thunderbolt 5 host port, two downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports and one downstream USB 20 Gb/s (USB 3.2 Gen 2x2) USB-C port for peripherals. The Thunderbolt ports are backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 devices.

Storage Performance

LaCie specifies transfer speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s with RAID 0 and up to 2,500 MB/s with RAID 5. These figures give the array sufficient sustained throughput for high-resolution editing and large media transfers while allowing users to choose between maximum performance and parity-protected operation.

Hardware RAID And Multi-RAID Flexibility

The 8big Pro5 supports hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, as well as JBOD and multi-RAID configurations. Multi-RAID allows separate logical arrays with different RAID levels to coexist across the eight bays, providing flexibility for workflows that need different balances of capacity, performance and redundancy.

Hot-Swappable Enterprise Storage

This 64TB model provides 64TB of raw enterprise-class storage across eight hot-swappable bays. Individual drives can be serviced without shutting down the enclosure, helping reduce interruption when a drive needs replacement.

Power Delivery And Expansion

The Thunderbolt 5 host port can provide up to 140W to a compatible computer. Each downstream Thunderbolt 5 port can provide up to 30W and the downstream USB 20 Gb/s port up to 15W. LaCie also promotes scaling to as much as 7.68 PB of total connected storage in a Mac Studio-based configuration.

Management, Backup And Recovery

LaCie RAID Manager is used to configure and manage the hardware RAID and monitor drive health. Seagate Toolkit Backup Software is also supported for automated backup workflows. The product carries a five-year limited warranty and five-year Rescue Data Recovery Services, subject to the manufacturer’s terms and regional availability.

Professional Design

The aluminium enclosure is designed by Neil Poulton and includes an integrated handle for transport. LaCie states that the 8big Pro5 contains a minimum of 35% recycled materials, with 95–100% recycled carton used in its packaging.
